If you need to import a Google Tag Manager (GTM) container into your website (like one of those that we have developer over the years to help you track actions), the process is straightforward. This guide will take you through the steps to import a GTM container and ensure that you don't overwrite any existing tags, triggers, or variables.

1 Log into GTM

To import a GTM container, you need to log in to your GTM account at https://tagmanager.google.com/.

2 Click Admin

Once you're logged in, click on the "Admin" button located in the top navigation bar.

3 Select Import Container

From the "Admin" menu, select "Import Container" under the "Container" section.

3 Choose Container File

Next, select the option to "Choose Container File" and browse your computer for the container file that you want to import.

4 Merge Container - DO NOT OVERWRITE

Select the option to "Merge" the container when prompted. This will ensure that you don't overwrite any existing tags, triggers, or variables in your GTM account.

5 Rename Conflicting Tags, Triggers, and Variables

If there are any conflicting tags, triggers, or variables in the container that you're importing, you'll need to rename them to avoid overwriting existing ones. GTM will prompt you to do this during the import process.

6 Review Settings

Review the settings and configurations of the container that you're importing, and ensure that they match your website's requirements.

7 Select Confirm

Once you've reviewed the settings, click the "Confirm" button to start the container import process.

8 Review Imported Container in Workspace Overview

Once the container is imported, you'll see a success message, and the new container will be visible in your GTM account. Review the imported container in the Workspace Overview to ensure that everything looks correct.

9 Make any necessary adjustments

If there are any adjustments that you need to make to the imported container, you can do so now.

10 Publish changes

Once you're happy with the imported container, you can publish the changes to your website by clicking the "Submit" button in the top right corner of the Workspace Overview.

That's it! You've successfully imported a GTM container into your website without overwriting any existing tags, triggers, or variables.
